{"id":2227,"date":"2012-05-30T21:34:26","date_gmt":"2012-05-30T21:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.physiologicalcomputing.net\/?p=2227"},"modified":"2021-12-22T20:20:54","modified_gmt":"2021-12-22T20:20:54","slug":"reflections-on-body-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.physiologicalcomputing.net\/?p=2227","title":{"rendered":"Reflections on Body Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Way back in February, Kiel and I did an event called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ljmu.ac.uk\/MAS\/Openlabs\/121952.htm\">Body Lab<\/a> in conjunction with our LJMU colleagues at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ljmu.ac.uk\/aps\/OpenLabs\/\">OpenLabs<\/a>. \u00a0The idea for this event originated in a series of conversations between ourselves and OpenLabs about our mutual interest in digital health. The brief of OpenLabs is to &#8220;support local creative technology companies to develop new products and services that capitalise upon global opportunities.&#8221; \u00a0Their interest in our work on physiological computing was to put this idea out among their community of local creatives and digital types.<\/p>\n<p>I was initially apprehensive about wisdom of this event. I&#8217;m quite used to talking about our work with others from the research community, from both the commercial and academic side &#8211; what makes me slightly uncomfortable is talking about possible implementations because I feel the available sensor apparatus and other tools are not so advanced. \u00a0I was also concerned about whether doing a day-long event on this topic would pull in a sufficient number of participants &#8211; what we do has always felt very &#8220;niche&#8221; in my view. \u00a0Anyhow, some smooth-talking from Jason Taylor (our OpenLabs contact) and a little publicity in the form of this short <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ljmu.ac.uk\/MAS\/Openlabs\/OpenLabs_Docs\/NSPinterview.mp3\">podcast<\/a>\u00a0convinced that we should give it our best shot.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The idea behind the event was to do a day-long workshop event to introduce the concept of physiological computing to a novice audience from a diverse range of backgrounds. \u00a0We decided to do a couple of short presentations and then to split participants into three groups to experience a number of demos followed by discussion &#8211; and we enlisted our friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jenallanson.com\/\">Dr. Jen Allanson<\/a> to pitch in with ideas and to help out on the day. \u00a0After much discussion, we went with three demos, all of which were built around gaming because we thought gaming was the best introduction to the area. \u00a0One demo involved simultaneous capture of movement and heart\/respiration rate during Wii gameplay and a second focused on autonomic responses to a racing game running on a PlayStation. \u00a0The third demo was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Uncle-Milton-Star-Force-Trainer\/dp\/B001UZHASY\">Star Wars Force Trainer<\/a> game, which is a simple BCI using a Neurosky EEG sensor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2235\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.physiologicalcomputing.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/6820377536_125b2bf920_z.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2235\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2235\" title=\"Steve setting up the Wii demo, demonstrating the effects of physical activity during play  (Image credit -  LJMU OpenLabs)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.physiologicalcomputing.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/6820377536_125b2bf920_z-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.physiologicalcomputing.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/6820377536_125b2bf920_z-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.physiologicalcomputing.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/6820377536_125b2bf920_z.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve setting up the Wii demo, demonstrating the effects of physical activity during play (Image credit - LJMU OpenLabs)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The event took place on the 29th Feb. \u00a0To my relief, we got a decent turnout and so the next challenge was how to introduce the area in a digestible way. What really made the event work from my own selfish perspective was the opportunity to test ideas with a completely different audience than the usual suspects on the academic circuit.
